This is a short post about books, cakes, art and restoration. Paper and Cup is a small café on Calvert Avenue, located across from the almighty bulk of eighteenth-century Shoreditch Church and run by SCT (Spitalfields Crypt Trust). The café supports and trains people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, and serves up a nice array of Portuguese tarts, vegan cinnamon rolls, seed cakes, brownies and more. Second-hand philosophy tomes, pulp fiction and travel guides knock up against each other on the shelves in colour-coded glory, and the limited wall space is devoted to displaying artworks.
The current painting exhibition explores the Japanese concept of transient beauty, but the SCT project itself is far from ephemeral, having been set up fifty years ago by the vicar of Christ Church Spitalfields. Now located at Shoreditch Church, SCT operate the café, the brilliant Restoration Station workshop store, and a small hostel for homeless men in recovery. You can support this great project this Christmas by buying a brightly coloured book, coffee and a cake - and maybe even a new favourite chair to read your book in.
